“We wanted Nike to be the world's best sports and fitness company. Once you say that, you have a focus. You don't end up making wing tips or sponsoring the next Rolling Stones world tour.”

🔥 Business Spotlight: Phil Knight's Journey to Building Nike
Nike’s been special to me ever since I got my first pair of Air Maxes as a teenager. But after reading Shoe Dog, I’ve found a new appreciation for the company and for Phil Knight himself. From his early days in Oregon to traveling the world and eventually building a global brand, his journey is nothing short of remarkable.
What stands out most is how he turned a simple passion for running into one of the most iconic brands in the world. From selling shoes out of the trunk of his car to leading a company synonymous with the best names in sports, his journey is packed with lessons. Here are a few you can borrow for your own path to global success:
🎯 The Blueprint:
Follow Your Passion: Blend genuine enthusiasm with market needs.
Embrace Risk: Bold bets keep dreams alive.
Innovate Relentlessly: Always push product boundaries.
Tell Powerful Stories: Great brands inspire loyalty through stories.
📌 Key Lessons:
Commitment > Convenience: Persist through uncertainty.
Storytelling Wins: A compelling narrative creates lasting impact.
Quality Matters: Product excellence is non-negotiable.
Align with Aspirations: Help customers feel legendary.
→ “Shoe Dog” is one of the best business memoirs I’ve read. Told year by year, it walks you through the early days and the relentless hurdles Phil Knight faced while building Nike. He doesn’t come across as a particularly empathetic person. There are a few times in the book his decisions and tone feel selfish or detached. But that’s part of what makes the book compelling and what allowed him to create Nike. Overall, it’s an honest portrayal of the ambition and complexity behind a global brand. If you’re building something of your own, or just a fan of Nike, it’s absolutely worth the read
🌄 Remote Work Paradise: Stavanger, Norway
Tucked on the southwest coast of Norway, this charming town is just a boat ride away from the dramatic cliffs of Lysefjord, and even boasts surprisingly decent beaches (Not quite Brazil-level, but solid for Scandinavia).
What stood out most was the blend of sleek modern architecture with classic medieval charm and the world class restaurant scene there. Stavanger is home to multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, making it a dream for food lovers. On top of that, it consistently ranks as one of the top places for expats to live.
